How do I change the background of a slide?

Each slide can have its own background — a solid colour, an image, or a video. You can set a different background for each slide in your deck.

Accessing background settings

There are two ways to open the background settings:

  1. Click the settings gear icon above the slide (next to the slide title) to open the Slide tab in the right sidebar.

  1. Click the Slide tab directly in the right sidebar tab rail.

The Slide tab contains the slide name and the background picker.

Setting a solid colour background

  1. Open the background settings
  2. Choose Colour as the background type
  3. Pick a colour from the palette, find a colour on the spectrum, or enter a custom colour value

Reuse custom colours after choosing one by clicking the save button. Your most recently used colours are also stored for quick access.

Setting an image background

  1. Open the background settings
  2. Choose Image as the background type
  3. Select an image from the built-in Hive image library or from your uploads
  4. The image will fill the entire slide as a background (using cover sizing)

In presentation mode, the background image bleeds beyond the slide boundaries to fill the available space for immersion.

Setting a video background

  1. Open the background settings
  2. Choose Video as the background type
  3. Select a video from the Hive video background library

Video backgrounds will:

  • Play automatically during presentation mode
  • Loop continuously

In the editor, video backgrounds display as a static preview. The video plays only during presentation mode, where it bleeds beyond the slide boundaries to fill the available space.

Tips

  • Image backgrounds use "cover" sizing, meaning the image scales to fill the slide completely (parts may be cropped if the aspect ratio doesn't match)
  • Each slide can have a different background, so you can mix colours, images, and videos across your deck
  • If you want an image as a movable, resizable object rather than filling the whole slide, add it from the Insert tab instead
