Student Grouper
Student Grouper is a classroom tool that randomly sorts your students into groups. Choose your grouping method, set any rules, and the app does the rest — great for keeping groupings fresh and fair.
Before you start
Student Grouper requires a class to be set up in The Hive first. Read how to add students to your class here.
How do I access Student Grouper?
You can access Student Grouper in three ways:
- Through Teach Mode — open Student Grouper directly from the bottom bar of Teach Mode.

- From the Apps library — browse or search for Student Grouper in the Apps library.

- In your slide deck — search for Student Grouper in the apps panel on the right and tap it to drop it onto your slide. From there, you can move and resize it however you like.

How do I use Student Grouper?
Select your class from the Class dropdown. If you'd like student avatars to show alongside names, turn on Show avatars.
Choosing a grouping method
Under Method, choose how you'd like students to be grouped:
- Split into — enter the number of groups you want, and the app divides your class evenly across them.
- Groups of — enter how many students you want in each group, and the app works out how many groups that makes.
- Use group set — display your existing, pre-set groups (e.g. Literacy Groups, Maths Groups). See below for how to set these up.
Once you've chosen a method, tap Make groups to generate the groups randomly (only applies to Split into and groups of).

Setting up a group set
To use the Use group set method, you'll need to create a group set in your class roster first. Here's how:
- Go to Classes from the left-hand menu and select your class.
- Click on Groups, then select + Create new group set.
- Give the group set a name (e.g. "Literacy Groups") and name each group within it.
- Add students to each group, assign colours if you'd like, and save.

Once your group set is ready, select it from the list under Group set in Student Grouper. Read more about setting up group sets here.

Grouping rules
Turn on Use grouping rules to set rules about which students should or shouldn't be placed in the same group. This is useful if there are students you always want kept together or apart. Tap Learn more to manage or add your rules.
Colours
Choose a colour palette under Apply colours to colour-code the groups on screen. Options include Hive, Pastel Rainbow, Botanical, Neutral, Neon, Primary, Oceanscape, and more.
Selecting students
A checklist of all students in your class appears at the bottom of the settings panel. All students are included by default — untick any student you'd like to leave out of the grouping (for example, if a student is absent). The count at the top of the list shows how many students are currently included.

Using Student Grouper in a slide deck
When Student Grouper is added in a slide, the Use my saved settings toggle controls how the app behaves:
- Turn it on — the app uses your current saved settings (class, method, number of groups, colours). Any changes made while it's on will update your saved settings globally, so the next time you insert it into a slide, those settings carry over.

- Turn it off — you can adjust settings for that instance of the app without affecting your global saved settings.
