Phoggle
Phoggle is an interactive literacy challenge you can run with your class. A honeycomb grid is filled with phonemes, and students find as many words as they can using the sounds on the grid. You can customise which phoneme groups appear to suit your learners — from simple single sounds to digraphs and vowel phonemes.
How do I access Phoggle?
You can access Phoggle in three ways:
- Through Teach Mode — open Phoggle directly from the bottom bar of Teach Mode.

- From the Apps library — browse or search for Phoggle in the Apps library.

- In your slide deck — search for Phoggle in the apps panel on the right and tap it to drop it onto your slide. From there, you can move and resize it however you like. The New phonemes button sits at the top of the app, so you can refresh the grid without leaving the deck.

How do I use Phoggle?
Open Phoggle and a honeycomb grid will appear on screen filled with random phonemes, along with the prompt "How many words can you find on the grid?" Students find as many words as they can using the sounds shown.
- Use the button at the top of the screen to refresh the puzzle: New phonemes — generates a completely new grid of phonemes.

- Turn on Annotations to let you or your students write directly on the screen — great for marking answers, circling phonemes, or showing working out. A toolbar will appear at the bottom of the screen with options to draw, erase, and interact.
- You can also adjust the Grid size from the settings panel on the left — choose from Small, Medium, or Large to suit your display and the age of your students.
How do I edit the available sounds?
Tap Edit available sounds in the settings panel to choose which phonemes can appear on the grid. Sounds are grouped into categories, and you can turn each group on or off entirely, or tap individual phonemes to include or exclude them.
The available groups are:
- Single sounds — all individual alphabet letters (a–z).
- Common consonant digraphs — two-letter consonant combinations such as ch, sh, wh, th, ng, ck, ss, ff, zz, ll, and qu.
- Long vowel phonemes — vowel sounds such as ai, ay, ee, ea, oa, ow, oi, oo, ue, ew, and split digraphs like a_e, e_e, i_e, and u_e.
- More vowel phonemes — additional vowel sounds
- More consonant phonemes — additional consonant sounds
