Outside links not working


If you're having trouble linking files from your computer into The Hive, it may be due to browser settings or firewall restrictions. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you resolve these issues:


Check browser and extension permissions

For Both Mac and Windows:

  • Ensure you are using the Google Chrome browser.
  • Verify that you have an extension installed that allows for opening local links.

As of November 2023, Chrome requires users to opt-in for extensions to access local files. To enable this:

  1. Go to Extensions in the Chrome menu.
  2. Click on Manage Extensions.
  3. Locate the extension you installed and click the Details button.
  4. Find "Allow access to file URLs" and switch it on.

Link files from your computer

For Mac:

  1. Open Finder and navigate to the folder containing your file.
  2. Go to View > Show Path Bar or press the Option key to display the path bar.
  3. Highlight the file you want to link.
  4. Right-click on the path at the bottom of the Finder window and select Copy "your file name" as Path Name.
  5. Paste this path into the "Local file path" field in The Hive. The path should look something like /Users/Bee/my-pres.pptx .

For Windows:

  1. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the folder containing your file.
  2. Hold down the Shift key and right-click the file.
  3. Select "Copy as path" from the shortcut menu.
  4. Paste this path into the "Local file path" field in The Hive. The path should look like C:\Users\Bee\my-doc.txt .

Firewall or IT Restrictions

If you suspect that a firewall is blocking access to the Chrome extension or if your IT department restricts installations, you may need to contact your IT support team to address these permissions.


Alternative: Use Online Storage

If local links are still not working, consider using online storage solutions like OneDrive or Google Drive. These services allow you to generate shareable links or URLs for your files, which can be easily linked within The Hive.


Troubleshooting Tips:

  • Revisit the Chrome extension permissions if you encounter issues.
  • Ensure that your firewall or security settings are not blocking access to the Chrome extension.
  • Try accessing The Hive from a different browser or computer to rule out browser-specific issues.
