Syllable Mapper
Break words into their syllable constituents.
Teaching students the different types of syllables will support students in being able to effectively decode and spell multi-syllabic words. There are 6 main syllable types:
- Closed Syllables- syllable ends with a consonant and the vowel sound is usually short
- Open Syllables- syllable ends with a vowel and the vowel sound is usually long
- Vowel + Consonant + E Syllables- syllable ends with a split digraph (a_e, o_e, i_e, u_e, e_e)
- Vowel Team syllables- syllable is spelled with two vowels next to each other
- R-controlled Vowel Syllables- syllable has a vowel followed by an 'r' which affects the vowel sound
- Consonant + le Syllables- syllable has a consonant followed by 'le' at the end of a word
- From the Dashboard left-hand side menu click on Apps.
- Search, filter by Literacy, or find the app tile in the list. Click on Syllable Mapper.
- Click the 'Close Menu' button at the bottom left of the screen to enter full screen.
- Generate a random word or enter your own to break it down and count its syllables.
By default, the word shown whenever the app is opened is 'syllable'
- Drag the separators or markers into the box.
- You can expand the Legend list to view all available markers. For additional details about the syllable types, hover over the information icon.
- Click 'Hide' to close the settings and get a fuller view.
Note: Full screen will only show the separator and the markers for vowel and consonant.
- Click 'Connect to Timetable' to connect the app to your timetable entries.
- Click the pin icon to add the app to your pinned apps on the dashboard.
