Syllable Mapper
Break words into their syllable constituents.
Teaching students the different types of syllables will support students in being able to effectively decode and spell multi-syllabic words. There are 6 main syllable types:
- Closed Syllables- syllable ends with a consonant and the vowel sound is usually short
- Open Syllables- syllable ends with a vowel and the vowel sound is usually long
- Vowel + Consonant + E Syllables- syllable ends with a split digraph (a_e, o_e, i_e, u_e, e_e)
- Vowel Team syllables- syllable is spelled with two vowels next to each other
- R-controlled Vowel Syllables- syllable has a vowel followed by an 'r' which affects the vowel sound
- Consonant + le Syllables- syllable has a consonant followed by 'le' at the end of a word
- (Via The Hive only) From the Dashboard left-hand side menu click on Apps.
- (Via The Hive only) Search, filter by Literacy, or find the app tile in the list. Click on Syllable Mapper.
- (Via The Hive only) Click the 'Close Menu' button at the bottom left of the screen to enter full screen.
(Via The Hive only) Check the syllable types for which you'd like to find a random word, then click "Get random word"
By default, the word shown whenever the app is opened is 'syllable'
(Via Wordabase only) Click "Random from Word Bank" to get another word from your current Word Bank.
- Drag the separators or markers into the box.
- The legend covers all available markers. For additional details about the syllable types, click the information icon.
- (Via The Hive only) Click 'Hide' to close the settings and get a fuller view.
Note: Full screen will only show the separator and the markers for vowel and consonant.
- (Via The Hive only) Click 'Connect to Timetable' to connect the app to your timetable entries.
- (Via The Hive only) Click the pin icon to add the app to your pinned apps on the dashboard.
