Nonsense Words
Nonsense Words is a phonics activity that generates random bogus words for students to decode. Great for assessing blending skills and phonics knowledge - students can't rely on sight word memory, so they have to sound it out.
How do I access Nonsense Words?
You can access Nonsense Words in three ways:
- Through Teach Mode - open Nonsense Words directly from the bottom bar of Teach Mode.
- From the Apps library - browse or search for Nonsense Words in the Apps library.
- In your slide deck - you can add the Nonsense Words App by clicking Apps > Type Class > Nonsense Words App.
How do I use Nonsense Words?
Tap Start to generate a random nonsense word.
Tap again to cycle through to the next word.
How do I choose which words appear?
You can filter the words by phonics pattern. Choose from:
- CVC - consonant-vowel-consonant words
- CVCC & CCVC - words with blends
You can select one or both patterns. When selected, you can narrow it further by choosing specific vowel sounds, specific letters, or both.
You can also turn on additional phonics categories:
- Consonant Digraphs
- Long Vowels
- Diphthongs
Tap the arrow next to each category to expand it and select individual sounds.
To go back to the default settings, tap Reset.
Tips
- You can add Nonsense Words to your favourite apps by tapping the star icon.
