How do I create my Teaching Cycle?

Firstly - what is the Teaching Cycle?

Think of your Teaching Cycle as a baseline template for each day of the week. Your cycle can be weekly, fortnightly (with Week A and Week B) or whatever other duration that your school uses. It includes two parts:

  1. Timetable - the regular lessons/activities that you do each day.

Within the Teaching Cycle, you create a typical timetable for each day of your cycle, adding in your regular activities with their default connections.

Then, you can save time setting up your timetable each day by duplicating the content from your Teaching Cycle in a single click! If you need, you can then make any edits you might need for the day.

Don't worry if a particular day is very different to what you've defined in your Teaching Cycle. You can still start from scratch or copy from another date instead.

  2. Slide Decks - the default slide decks that you would like to access each day in your cycle.

Simply create your slide decks, and then add them to your Teaching Cycle on whichever days you'd like to see them.

They'll always be available in your dashboard for fast access!

One way that you might like to use slide decks in the Teaching Cycle is to add a different daily routine deck for each day of the week. Then, you can tweak those slides as the term goes on to add or change content. You won't need to do anything else to make it available in your dashboard on the right day!

P.S. Don't worry, if a particular day is a little bit different, you can still start from scratch or copy from another date instead.

1. From the left hand side menu press 'Plan' and go to 'Teaching Cycle'.

By default, your teaching cycle will be empty until you add timetable entries.

  1. Pick from common term dates or set your own.

It's recommended to define your term dates before setting up your teaching cycle, as The Hive uses them to identify the corresponding day in your Teaching Cycle for and to track the current week of the term.

  1. If your school operates on a fortnightly (or longer) schedule, you can add up to 2 more weeks. Simply click '+ Add week'.

  1. Add timetable entries for each day by clicking '+ Add or edit entries.' If you've already created your timetable options, just click the + icon. If not, you can create one using the same process.

If you want to create default connections that are available each time you use the timetable option, expand the timetable and select the item you wish to connect.

Note: Connections made to your timetable entries on individual days (i.e. Week Planner and Day Planner) will not appear in your teaching cycle.

  1. If your daily schedules are similar with only slight adjustments, you can copy the teaching cycles from before and after.

  1. To generate your weekly plan, which will automatically update your daily timetables, go to 'Week' and click 'Generate from teaching cycle'.

If your weekly planner has already been set up, clicking 'Generate from Teaching Cycle' will only copy teaching cycle entries to the empty days.

Note: Changes to your teaching cycle will not automatically update your existing daily or weekly plans. If you wish, you can delete all entries to create a fresh setup.

Term dates are based on the public school term dates for each state in Australia and New Zealand. Make sure to double check they are correct for you and your school!

If your school/area isn't covered here, feel free to choose a similar option, or begin with an empty year and manually complete the dates.

This is required so that we can do some fancy calendar maths to determine whether you're currently in Week A or Week B (and so on).
