Four in a Roll
Four in a Roll is a two-player game that reinforces literacy and numeracy skills. Players roll the dice to find out which column they can place a counter in, then complete the task shown before dropping it — first to get four in a row wins.
How do I access Four in a Roll?
Via The Hive
You can access Four in a Roll in three ways:
- Through Teach Mode — open Four in a Roll directly from the bottom bar of Teach Mode.
- From the Apps library — browse or search for Four in a Roll in the Apps library.
- In your slide deck — search for Four in a Roll in the apps panel on the right and tap it to drop it onto your slide. From there, you can move and resize it however you like.
Via Wordabase
Four in a Roll is also available as a free online tool through Wordabase.
Note that some features are only available in the full Hive version.
How do I play?
Tap Roll to roll the dice and find out which column a player can place their counter in. Before dropping the counter, the player must complete the task shown in that column (e.g. decode, identify, solve, etc). Tap Reset at any time to clear the board and start a new game.
How do I choose what goes on the board?
Via The Hive
You can choose from four content options to fill the game board:
- Numbers — generates a set of numbers on the board. Tap New numbers to populate the board and get started.
- Math expressions — fills the board with equations. Customise the settings by choosing a minimum and maximum number, selecting operations (e.g. addition, subtraction), and optionally including special operations. Tap New numbers to generate the expressions.
- Hive words — fills the board with words drawn from the Hive word library. Tap Edit filters to filter by phonics category or sound pattern, then tap New words to generate the word list.
- Items from a Word Bank — choose a word bank from the dropdown menu to use your own word lists. Tap Edit Word Banks to customise or manage your word banks, then tap New words to begin.
Via Wordabase
Four in a Roll uses your Wordabase Word Bank to fill the board. The number of words currently in your Word Bank is shown next to the Random from Word Bank button.
- If your Word Bank is empty, tap Add random words to populate it with a set of random words. These words will be added to your Word Bank and used to fill the board.
- If your Word Bank already has words, tap Random from Word Bank to generate the board using a random selection from your list.
You can view and manage the words in your Word Bank by tapping the list icon next to the Random from Word Bank button. From here you can also add custom words or remove existing ones.

Tips
- You can add Four in a Roll to your favourite apps via the Teach Mode or through the App library. Click on this icon if you're adding it through the App library.
